Sewing Circle for Sustainability: A Theatre for Social Change Project

April 2023-ongoing

Developed as a workshop at Montclair State University (MA Theatre Studies). Sewing Circle for Sustainability has been run four times since April of 2023, with participants ranging in age from 11 to 84. Using packaging waste and fabric scraps, often from orders placed on costume materials for shows or on plain everyday clothing, Sewing Circle for Sustainability asks participants to recontextualize and eventually reconsider their relationship with the fast fashion cycle and its devastating environmental and human tolls by turning waste materials into both functional and non-functional garments and other art projects with a final goal of providing them with the resources necessary to become involved in fashion sustainability movements. Lesson plan is available upon request.
